I agree that there are bad programmers *now*...and I agree that
there were bad programmers *then*. I have seen some awful COBOL
code..."back in the day" it was easier to get away with sloppy
programming because *no* one but the programmers understood what
the computer did.

But IMHO, now and then, one reason for *bad* programmers is that
so many people got into programming because they heard that they
could make a *lot* of money by working as a programmer. I think
these folks account for at least 80% of the bad programmers.
