FIDO net..  Ahhh.. :-), but that was some funny stuff..

Flashback...  First peripheral I bought for my first (that I owned) computer
(from my own paycheck :-) was a VIC Modem 300.  300 baud modem for my
Vic20..  Ahh...  Those were the days...

(I have to admit it..  I couldn't afford the Apple.  (Actually, I wanted a
Franklin ACE, but couldn't afford that either..)  My RICH (well, I thought
he was) friend had the Apple II+..  And Ultima II..  I was going to buy a
ZX81 when I got the $100 together, because the Vic20 was $300 at the time (I
think..), but when I finally got the money, the Vic20 had a price drop (was
the 64 coming out?  or out maybe??) to just about $100..  So I got that..

(It was nice to be able to write AND test my BASIC programs.  Before that, I
was writing BASIC, and waiting for the travelling CPM machine to swing by to
be able to test it..  My school didn't have a computer, but there was one
that would make the rounds.  In line with another thread here, you better
believe I wrote tighter and better code knowing that I only had 1 hour or so
to enter it and test it.  If it didn't work, it might be a few weeks before
I could try it again.  I was the MASTER OF THE FLOWCHART!! :-)

Then I saw Wargames, so I had to get a modem.  And then I discovered
BBSes...  The rest is history...

p.s.  I found out later that some of the "projects" I was working on at
school were actually being put into production by the "teacher".  It wasn't
an official class, and he was a programmer at some company.  He'd come by
with "Project Ideas" and see what we could do.   Turns out, they were HIS
projects, and if they were decent, he'd present them to his work as HIS..
:-)  So he was a winner on both sides..  (Except for maybe actually knowing
how to do his job.  Well, he knew BASIC, but it didn't take too long for
some of us to be waiting for his computer, not him.. :-)  When I found out,
I was thrilled..  Very TRON esque.. (Of course, they weren't cool assembly
games.  They were boring BASIC accounting programs, but it was the concept..

p.p.s.  I got my first Apple (my //e) about 5 years ago..  FINALLY!!!!
