They are still used in embedded systems. They are a simple
way to add real-timekeeping capability to a system without
any hardware rework.
Dallas/Maxim still makes them, as they always have.
They just keep a 2-digit year field, but now that 2000 is
behind us, it doesn't matter much. ;-)
