I use a Farallon EtherWave adapter, sold at Fry's on the Macintosh aisle
for people who want to connect an old localtalk printer. It works just fine
on the IIgs. Ethernet to a Linux box with netatalk works fine, though I've
only managed to get "guest" logins to work on AppleShare.

Because you're still speaking AppleTalk. You can't run FTP, telnet, or a
web browser. You're limited to acting as an AppleShare client. The
adapters just encapsulate AppleTalk packets in Ethernet ("EtherTalk").
