For me, the best video game music of all time is the title theme to Skate or Die
2 - The Search for Double Trouble. Those heavy rock riffs, sounding like its
coming from a psuedo-amp, is great. And then the lyrics, which go like this:

"Skate - or - Die!"
"Skate - or - Die, Die! Die! Die! Die! Die!"
"Skate - or - Die!"
"Skate, Skate - Skate, Skate - or - Die, Ddddddddd Die!"

Very inventive, don't you think? Its much better than the game that comes with
it. Truly, Skate or Die 2 has aged very poorly.

Actually, it sounds far too strange and derivative to be my favorite. So I would
probably put my favorite classic video game tune as the soundtrack for Ultima
IV - Quest of the Avatar, on the Apple II with a two chip Mockingboard. Like
Gyruss, it uses multiple AY-8910s (two as opposed to five.) This also gives it
stereo sounds, with 3 voices per speaker. The themes composed for each part of
the game as perfect. The dungeon music is a descent into darkness, the castle
music imposing, the town/main theme music a thoughtful evoking of virtue, the
shrine music meditative, the wandering music is one of high adventure, the combat
them rousing, and even the smaller pieces, the shopping and Lord British themes,
are pleasantly appropriate.

If you want a single music piece, then I would pick "Stones (by Iolo & Gweno)"
from Ultima V - Warriors of Destiny, which sounds best using two Mockingboards
with 4 AY-8910s, but is particularly adaptable to Midi. Dramatic, haunting,
well-paced, appropriate length, it is worthy of inclusion into a classical
library.
