Upgrading a Zip to 12Mhz or so is extremely common and usually very
simple. It worked for me just by replacing the old 65816 with a 14Mhz
part and plugging in a new oscillator. That much doesn't entail any risk
at all that I'm aware of. Going beyond that requires more invasive
changes.
I'm not too worried about damage though, since most components are easily
replaceable. The biggest problem would be if the Zip chip itself became
damaged. I've never heard of that happening before though, at least not
due to heat or a higher frequency.
