Of course, sorry. I believe the drive Hardware wants to get whole bytes
from the computer which are then serialized in hardware, right? So 3
bits wouldn't make too much sense in the Apple method of dealing with
one byte at a time.

I think Commodore drives convert 4 bytes at once (to 5 bytes) so they
can store it a bit tighter. Maybe they even convert a whole block before
starting the writing process.
