Hey Joe,

your comment about the 3rd generation users hit home... I want my kids to
know how computers *work* not just how to *use* them and I can't think of a
better machine to teach them on... and that is one of the reasons I got back
into the Apple IIxx scene as I remember the hours of fascination I had for
these computers amd how much I learned back in the 80's... I am another one
of those "Apple II changed the direction of my life" folks....

The base hardware may be cheap but as Bill says acquiring the information to
expand/enhance it can start to add up. This information and software can end
up being many times the cost of the machine itself which seems wierd....

For modern hardware/software there are some companies out there that still
charge for developement kits but quite often most of the programming/data
sheet  information is given away freely. The type of information that Apple
used to charge for (APDA) they now give away for the Mac for example....

In the last couple of months I have been the lucky recipent of a big load of
free (rescued) Apple II stuff .... I have also spent several hundred dollars
on a complete used IIGS system, programming books and software. And I plan
to spend some more .....

Seeing a project like Rich Dreher's CFFA card really got the juices going
(I plan to order one or two when they are ready). In fact I have already
bought a 160MB CF Flash card and have some 2.5 hard drives I can use with
it...

In my world there is room for the real thing and emulators, because it is
all based on Apple II technology and that in it self interests me....
