There was an attempt at designing an alternative to the LanceGS but the 
coordinator of that effeort seems to have disappeared

Considering the cost of 
buying the Embedded Ethernet board ($74), 
bulding one's own (or hacking from an existing board) interface board, 
and then devloping an TCP/IP stack or module to have Marinetti use a new 
custom board... 
It would probably be simplest to get the LanceGS card ($155+S&H) and 
continue from there.
