Please look at the calendar. We have year 2003 now and no user program
should mess with hardware directly. It is up to operating system and/or middle
layer of support libraries. In Windows world there is DirectX, which is a good
thing because once the system is configured every program, every game will
make use of your hardware instantly. In Linux there is SDL library (which has
been ported to Windows/DirectX too) that serves for the middle layer.
A program calls SDL which chooses the path on the lower level - to talk to X
server, gfx card through SVGALib or even ASCII renderer.
