Re: Commodore 1702 & 1084 (color composite monitors)....as TV?
I used to have a 1702 monitor hooked up to a rather aged Sanyo top-loading
betamax for the same purpose. So I had to lift the monitor off the vcr
every time I wanted to change a tape, as the monitor was just stacked on top
of the VCR! Also the channel tuning was accomplished by analog dial (for
each channel). Still have the Sanyo but the monitor has been since ebayed
away for a hefty sum (and shipping price) :) The monitor was acquired at a
surplus auction for $3 (part of a lot which included another monitor and
some sort of A/V cart...). If you want to go retro then go all the way.
On a semi related note, at one point I had an RF modulator hooked up into my
Apple IIe, which I ran thru a VCR and then into a Thomson color monitor, in
addition to an apple green composite monitor hooked up to the video port.
There was a little signal loss and noise due to the two displays for some
reason, but not too bad. So I was able to use the green monitor for text
stuff and the color monitor for games (no I didn't have one of the fancy
dual mode ones). Also with the VCR in the loop I was able to record output
from the apple to tape as well as feed tv/video to the color monitor. Good
stuff.
Yes you could probably find some old cable switch box at a thrift store or
something. If you search for ("tv tuner" or "tv tuner box") on ebay you get
some hits but they are basically overpriced toys in fancy plastic cases
"designed" for "modern" equipment. An old VCR will do the same thing.
