Radio Shack also has a desoldering iron...it's basically a 45-watt soldering
iron with a hollow tip. The tip has a rubber bulb attached at the end of a
metal arm...squeeze the bulb, put the tip over the joint, melt the solder,
and let go of the bulb. You can work the iron with one hand (use your thumb
to control the bulb), it's fairly cheap ($10), and if you replace the stock
tip with the heavy-duty tip (which'll set you back a whole $2.00), you'll
get fairly long life out of it. (The tip that comes with it wears out
pretty quickly, but I've been using the same heavy-duty tip for years.)
The part numbers are 64-2060 for the iron and 64-2062 for the heavy-duty
tip. It might not be as spiffy as a vacuum desoldering station, but it gets
the job done without putting a big dent in your wallet.
