You might look at Waba (www.wabasoft.com) for a smallish JVM - I wrote a
couple of primitive apps for my Palm with it.

The market sucks here, too.  I sure didn't expect it, but between a new
systems engineer and a contract software guy, my last project went from C
and BSD sockets to Java, C++, XML, and CORBA because that's what the new
guys knew about.  Since management liked the fuzzies they got from the new
buzzwords more than the warnings from the old software folks who worried
about efficiency and performance, the new folks won.  I bailed - for the
moment, unemployment is better than that :)
