You're ignoring or ignorant of the fact that there were GUIs for the PC prior to Windows, and that one of them was achieving commercial success, until M$ strong armed Apple into threatening a suit, even though Apple had already given a green flag to said GUI. What was the GUI? GEM, by DRI, M$ OS/Language rival. At that point in time Windows wouldn't even boot, and needed Apple technology to run, while GEM was running and gathering third party software.
GEM had it's weaknesses, but it's doubtful that Windows would have won if DRI wasn't derailed by M$'s "monopoly pressure" on Apple (well, it really wasn't monopoly pressure, but M$ threatened to cancel all application development for the Mac if Apple didn't derail GEM - the technique is one that M$ has used many times once they did have monopoly power - and BTW - how many OTHER third party applications were being developed for the Mac? Other than Jazz???)

Commodore's Amiga series, Atari's ST series, Berkeley Softworks GEOS and other names. We may hate M$ but they had their role even when M$ wants to take all the credit.
