Andrew and anyone else interested,

My trick is to add .txt, that's "DOT TXT", to the filename,
example "******.shk.txt" when downloading to IBM.
Then when you transfer to Apple II with xmodem,
just name it without it and it should retain it's filetype info.
If transferring with zmodem, simply rename after the transfer.
I have had no trouble with this method since implementing it.
Try it, let me know if it works for you.
