Okay.

I found my Flashboot disk and tried it out.  The procedure is as follows:

1. Make a Ramdisk of 800, 1600, or 2400 K (for System 6.0.1 you want 1600 or
2400).

2. Run Flashboot

3. Select the "Prepare Ram disk" menu item
(you have to press Return to activate a menu item), and when it asks if you
want to format the Ram disk, do so.  This installs a special file called LOADER
which is used by Flashboot Image disks; it also probably writes the boot blocks
onto /RAM5 that some some IIGS programs forget to do.

4. Launch a copy program (Finder 6.0.1 will do) and copy all the files from the
6.0.1 System.disk to the RAM5 disk.  From the Finder, I did this by holding
down the option key and dragging the System.disk icon onto the RAM5 icon
(choose the option that "Adds the contents of System.disk to the contents of
RAM5," as this will preserve the LOADER file -- important!).  It's also a good
idea to copy the Flashboot.system file to the RAM disk, as it's small (19K) and
does all the maintenance features you'll need for your Image disks.

5. Now run the Flashboot program again (double click Flashboot icon from
Finder).  

6. Choose the "Save Image disk" menu item, and press Return (make sure you've
got some blank disks on hand to save the image to).

7. After you've got your Image disks made, you can boot them as you would any
3.5" disk (for example PR#5 from BASIC), and they will load the Image you saved
onto the RAM disk.  You may want to set your startup slot to slot 5 (or
wherever you've got your 3.5" drive hooked up -- it's usually slot 5).  After
the Image is loaded, choose the "Boot the RAM disk Once" option, as usually
you'll be booting Image disk floppies, not the RAM disk (which is empty at
powerup, naturally).

That's it.  I tested it today, and it worked for me, booting System 6.0.1 Image
disks.  Note that I've got a ROM01 GS.  I don't know if Flashboot works with
ROM03s.  Have you got a ROM03 (it will say so at the bottom of the screen when
you first boot the computer).
