I ran a retail business using various versions of AppleWorks 1.0-2.1,
along with Quicken, as my accounting software. (AppleWorks 3.0 came out
just as I was moving on to other things.)
I had also purchased the Dac Easy accounting software. I never really used
it, because I found it rigid to set-up and generally more cumbersome to
use than AppleWorks. However, it might have made certain things easier.
For example, generating monthly billing statements.
While using AppleWorks for accounting was less automated than a dedicated
package would have been, it easily met my needs and was a major step up
from doing it all by hand. The only real difficulty I had was when I was
trying to run it from a stock //e with 128k and a pair of 5.25" drives.
AppleWorks really needs more memory and a larger drive.
AppleWorks 3 may have come out too late for my business, but when combined
with TotalControl, TimeOut ReportWriter and Cellink, it could rival a
dedicated package. ReportWriter, in particular, takes some effort to
learn, but it is a truly powerful tool for business purposes.
