The runner-up bidder always sets the price on eBay--that's the
way it works. The selling price is one minimum bid (or very
occasionally less) over the next lower bidder. It is not possible
to have a greater winning bid because of the way proxy bidding
works.
So anytime you see a high-priced auction, you know that there
are at least _two_ people who think the item is valuable. (If it
was a high opening bid, then the other one is the seller. ;-)
I note that both high bidders generally (but not always) have
low feedback, indicating newbies.
