As someone who used their service for awhile, I feel your pain.

I would be cautious about where it comes from. At least when I used
them, AOL would annually "renew" your marketing preferences (ie,
waive your previous "request" not to have them sell your info).
It was at keyword "marketing preferences" or something like that.

I have a friend who uses AOL, has never posted to usenet
and probably doesn't know what a message board or chatroom is.
She still gets about 10-20 pieces of spam today. But if my
experience is typical, even a virgin address, never used for
anything but email will get clogged up with Klez refuse, which
has recently been much more numerous in frequency and in KB
than good old household spam.

Yes, I saw that when checking here earlier. Unfortunate, but
it *was* just one guy (a regular? haven't been here long enough
to know). With more desktop operating systems being taken off
of the market, I think arguments about what's ethical versus
what's practical (and how ethical or practical certain actions
are) are only going to get more intense on usenet and message
boards. I don't know what percentage it is, but I know that a
lot of BeOS users were installing an illegally "leaked" version
of a future release of the OS within weeks of the company being
bought out by Palm.

Anyway, not even governments can legislate against arrogance,
rudness or stupidity. It's sad that a lot of knowledgable people
won't post (but, from your earlier message and an earlier sentiment
about receving responses by email, apparently lurk) because of
the odd flame. I mean - would I have heard of TEXAS II if you
didn't post here?

Cheers,

Cali
