I would argue with the characterization of "best solution".  True,
the black boxes are very easy to operate, but it's a pain in the
neck when an exploit is released and you have to wait for the vendor
to release a patch.

Personally, I run a BSD-based firewall with NAT routing.  When an
exploit is released, the software is usually already updated -- and
if it isn't, I can fix the system myself without waiting on the
vendor.
