Thanks Dominic.  I took the grappler out and put a different one in
and it worked.  I thought there must have been a real switch
somewhere.  It sounds like in this case it's a virtual switch.  I
thought it was interesting the not having the cable connected to the
printer gave a message that printer was out of paper.
