But why assume they were trying to "break into your computer"?

One of the things that bugged me about BBS's, the reason that
I never got into them before late 1994, was because of that whole
registration process.

I had a modem starting in 1984.  Every so often, I'd come across
a BBS number or decide that I really ought to explore that whole
world.  So I'd dial one up, and before I had an opportunity to
look around, to see anything, I'd have to register.  Why bother
registering when you don't know if the place is of interest
to you?  And I didn't particularly like giving away information
to some system that I'd just dialled in.  So I'd try some combinations
to see if there was guest entry, or maybe I'd just hang up, or
sometimes I'd go through the registration process.  But each time
I'd do this, I'd mever call again.  Some months, or a year, would
go by, and I'd start the whole process.

Now we're on the Internet, I use a legit email address that I've had
for six years, and I keep bumping into places that I must register
in order to access.  Not only do I not like the process, but even
when I do register, I'm likely to lose the password five minutes
later.  Unless something is really interesting, and you can see
that from the outset, it's all just too much trouble.
