I hope you are using something like a Zip disk or removable hard disk. Even Linux won't be able to handle 800K floppies. The 1.4Mb floppies should be fine. It's a hardware thing.
I seem to recall something about Macs not being able to read HFS disks formatted with an earlier FST version. I don't think the same problem exists with Linux.
