Two things come to mind.  One is the odd nature of the Mac serial/printer
ports.  It's been too long to remember detail, but early cables didn't
do Mac hand-shaking properly.  When faster modems (such as 14.4K) came
along, one needed a  cable with slightly different wiring.  I remember
rewiring my Mac to modem cable when I moved from a 2400baud to 14.4K.

The other thing is even vaguer in my mind.  Am I thinking of some other
piece of hardware (or completely other computer?) when I remember
something about a crystal for setting baud rate being off somewhat?
There was something that used an existing crystal that was a bit off
for baud rate timing, and it caused problems in some cases or at higher
speeds.  Since I've never had a IIC, this is a detail I wouldn't have
remembered in the first place.
