Yes but even years later when IBM was selling Aptivas for a
quite competitive price with the compatibles, Macs were still
expensive.

Macs have *always* been expensive, and still are.

What they should have done is integrate Apple II software
compatibility into the first Macs AND an Ensoniq sound
chip plus color graphics.  A Macintosh IIGS basically.  Then
lower the price over time.

And guess what, they did. Ok, the II in 1987 still was way too expensive, but with the LC I/II/III/475 they basically did. Four years too late though..
