That behavior is consistent with a bad connection to the printer,
a not-ready printer, or a blown printer or //c serial port. Some
additional experimentation is called for.
Do you have another serial printer? Another cable? Have you
tried re-plugging everything? Is there paper in the printer (since
it won't be ready without paper)? Do the printer lights say that
it's online? Are the DIP switches in the printer set for the right
baud rate? Do you have an RS-232 "snoop" box with lights that
show port activity--if so, soes it show any when you try to print?
