I have a couple of questions about two hard drives I have. I've
looked at various archives, but I'm probably not familiar enough with
where things might be filed ... ;)
I have a Sider ][ 10M (?) hard drive on an Apple IIgs and a TruStor
10M hard drive on an Apple //e. I also have what appears to be a
spare controller card for the TruStor.
Everything was purchased used some time ago and has waited for me to
have time to look at it. The IIgs/Sider came with only the software
installed on it, but it does have some Sider utilities installed. The
TruStor came with an "Advanced Tech Services TruStor/Sider ProDOS
formatter and head parker" disk. I also have Glen Bredon's ProSel.
I am replacing both drives with CFFAs from
http://dreher.net/CFforAppleII/ because I'd like to get rid of the
large boxes of moving parts. I'd like to wipe and reformat both
drives and find them to good homes. Two obsticles:
1. I don't have dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/hdd like I would on a UNIX
machine. Anyone ever write a wipe utility?
2. Can I get the original software for the Sider? Is it worth trying
to preserve or re-create the CP/M, Pascal, and DOS3.3 partitioning
on the Sider? Should I forget about it and format in ProDOS?
Suggestions welcome, offers of a good home will be considered ;) The
TruStor sounds pretty good, but the Sider is making a fair bit of
noise and may not be long with its smoke inside.
Thanks,
Jim
