To enter the self-test, you must hold down both the open apple and closed
apple keys while powering on the IIc.

If the self-test ROM is present, a checkerboard pattern appears on the
screen which changes slightly every few seconds.  Then the checkerboard
cycles more rapidly 5 or 6 times with the same number of beeps.  If all
tests are passed, the checkerboard display is replaced by the words "SYSTEM
OK" on a blank screen.  If not, error messages are displayed which can
identify the location of defective RAM.
