I seem to remember that, it shipped with only 512K on-board. Did it have
any other hardware differences, or a different firmware ROM?

Hmm, interested. I know the card is technically supposed to work in an
Apple IIe, though I figured it was something that hadn't yet been supported,
such as Double-Hi-Res, Fill-Mode, 3200 color mode or (my memory is a little
fuzzy here) 24-bit color in SS-native mode. Future firmware updates were
supposed to address these, but they never happened.
The manual does mention it working in a IIe, though when I tried plugging
into an Enhanced IIe, all I could display was 40 columns text mode. I'm
fairly sure I removed most other cards to eliminate the possibility of
incompatibilities too.
