You have to boot via GS/OS in order to load the AppleTalk support
software, including the AppleShare client.

You can mount server volumes during startup, manually via the AppleShare
control panel, or via aliases from the GS/OS Finder.

Once you've booted into GS/OS, you can launch ProDOS-8 applications,
which will be able to access currently mounted server volumes (only by
volume name, not by slot/drive).

GS/OS doesn't impose any naming restrictions on the server, but the
normal ProDOS-8 restrictions apply to the name of the server volume (or
shared folder) and all contained folders and files which are to be
accessed from ProDOS-8.

e.g. if you share the Mac's hard drive and it has the default name of
"Macintosh HD" (which contains a space) then you will be able to access
it from GS/OS, but not from any ProDOS-8 applications. The best
solution is usually to create a shared folder on the Mac with a more
restrictive name.

In theory, you could install an Apple II Workstation Card in the IIgs,
and use it in a pure 8-bit environment, booting off a local volume.

It might be possible to boot a IIgs from an AppleShare server (running
AppleShare 3.0.x or earlier) directly into ProDOS-8, and retain access
to the server. I've never tried this combination.
