For the Sony mechanism that is like the 800k drive, then yes, there is
one major difference in the mechanism that is easily discernible without
disassembly.  There is an extra switch at the front of the drive that
detects the hole in the 1.44 diskettes.  If you look inside the door of
the drive on the left side there is a slender white piece of vertical
plastic.  There is an identical one on the right side.  If there are two
on the right, then it is a super drive.  Left detects write protect,
Right detects inserted disk, 2nd one on the right detects the hole.
