Arghs!
Last night I was pounding away at my computer when I saw a brilliant flash
in the sky about a mile away. At that moment, my connection dropped.
I reestablished the connection and it worked fine for a couple of minutes,
then the modem conked out. Damn! Ameritech has fried yet another modem.
This never happened before I moved back in '97...!
So last night I went out and bought a new modem. This one is a nameless
56k faxmodem; it looks a bit like a Zoom, but it won't admit to any
particular brand name.
I obviously have the thing working, but I don't have it working correctly.
I'm using a simplified init string (AT&F1L3X0) and if I type that string
in by hand, the modem responds with an OK. My problem is that no matter
what modem type I choose and no matter how I type the init string,
ANSITerm tells me it can't initialize the modem, so it won't auto-dial.
That's right, I'm back to the old-fashioned "ATDT....." that I haven't
used on an Apple since back when I was using ASCII Express!
The closest I came to solving the problem was to tell ANSITerm that I had
"no modem in system" but when it connected, it didn't drop into terminal
mode and I got to watch the shell welcome message come up in the status
window. That's not real useful when you get right down to it...!
I am using the high-speed hardware handshaking protocol, and that is
working, as the "Online" indicator on my status bar follows actual modem
status.
Any ideas? Anybody know how to add another modem driver to ANSITerm? Any
idea where I can find Paul Parkhurst?
Thanks!!
