The Apple 1 circuit diagram on the web that I have seen shows a 6502 and
some jumpers to change to allow a 6800 to be used instead. See

and read Note 7.
I do not know of any 6501 based computers - according to what I have read
the 6501 was pulled, either before or shortly after release to prevent a
lawsuit with Motorola. My original MOS Technology 6500 family databook lists
the 6501 and its pinout.
