Re: DaynaFILE II question...
The DaynaFILE II drivers I have do not support the Apple PC 5.25 drive,
however the special version of DOS Mounter included with it does. So, once I
track it down I may be able to help you with that. However, a few things:
1> Anything past System 7 will mount maybe 1 out of 5 disks and not give you
wierd error messages, and allow you to see the files and copy them.
2> Don't attempt to write to the disk unless you have lots of time,
patience, and blank disks.
3> Non-DOS filesystems make DOS Mounter flip out with that particular drive
(I tried the ProDOS trick too)
4> The card was indeed only compatible with either the SE (PDS) or the Mac
II series (NuBUS) and this only included those that could take fullsize
nubus cards without adaptors, ie not the IIsi, AFAIK.
5> Slightly nonstandard disks make the computer crash hardcore, whether it's
system 6 or 7, though the most spectacular occur under 7 (of course). This
means disks with copyprotection, disks with unusual formats, disks that use
any sort of driver level compression. Sierra games come to mind, at least
the early bootable ones.
6> Yes, don't even think about OS 8 or beyond...I mean it.
7> Putting a crappy, old version of DOS Mounter on your system in
combination with PC Exchange or File Exchange (not Apple File Exchange) is
bad news.
Your best option for the ProDOS on a mac dilemma is a LC with the IIe card
and a 5.25 drive, sadly you'll never see the disk on the desktop....but at
least you can image them or copy files directly to a disk which *is* mounted
in the finder (a ProDOS HD partition) from within the IIe environment. This
works beautifully for working with terrible multidisk things like GEOS which
normally doesn't cope well being manipulated outside of GEOS
