You have to start somewhere. My first computer was a KIM-1, and I spent a
lot of time just trying bits of code, single-stepping it. Having the
parallel port meant I could add switches and LEDs to see how those
worked.
Remember, the PI was intended for learning to program, a really cheap
descendant of the Commodoe 64 or whatever, not an embedded controller.
That there is I/O is just incidental. The fact that many are seeing it as
a cheap controller, well I don't know if that clashes with the original
intent, or just means more get sold to keep the price down.
