That's not a good example, since the Apple II manual had the schematic for 
the computer, I'm pretty sure the disk drive manual had the circuit too. 
You had that to start with.  FOr the layout of the board, one could start 
from scratch, using the schematic to lay out the board, strip it down and 
make an exact copy (I don't know what was done, maybe both depending on 
the cloner).
