Another thing you could do is boot the game with the cover of the drive removed so that we can see where it is seeking. If the game is single-load it probably doesn't seek the whole disk. Other forensic experts (oh heck, I'll just call them our residential krackers ;-) might be able to tell if it is a spiral or half track scheme by how the head moves.
