I'm asking simply because the options for connecting a C64 to a PC are crap compared to the simplicity and low-cost option offered by the Apple -- so if I could convert a C64 disk image to a NIB image and then use ADT Pro to create the actual disk it would simplify my life considerably.

If you can find a place for me to stick that in my laptop I would be much obliged. :-D I got rid of desktop computers from my house a year ago. Too bulky, too noisy, and I needed the physical room for other stuff. I have too many spare laptops as it is, I didn't need old slow PCs lying around, let alone things running windows that I didn't want to maintain. But as it turns out I actually might have a core 2 duo laptop with a parallel port now that I think about it. I had forgotten about it because it's just been sitting on a shelf as a minecraft server for the kids ;-)

Anyway back to my main contention: There are some good mid-range ($50-$100) options, but no low-cost options in the $0-$50 range like there are in the apple world (such as direct RS232, headphone cables, etc)

With parallel ports disappearing, it would be a shame to run out of options but if you can do something like this with a parallel port then you can do something like this with the GPIO pins of a Raspberry Pi, Arduino or TI Launchpad using level shifters or optocouplers.
