All this talk about GBBS... but what about Metal or other variants?

What ever happened to Metal? I saw old posts that there was a fallout between TC Wilson and FutureVision's author in '93 (which is really unfortunate) but future vision was freeware. Did TC Wilson fall into obscurity or did Metal's source get transferred to someone else? Was FutureVision ever released as open source? Actually, what was the official license of Metal? It was freely available but people paid to d/l it?

At some point I'd like to see source for one of these programs so I can target exactly what is needed from an emulator standpoint. Feels like I'm typing in the dark sometimes, so I'm going to have to stop supporting BBS-related features of Jace until there is more support and I don't have to reverse-engineer stuff to figure out why its breaking. It is nearly impossible to perform the services of software preservation when the owners of the software are being so proprietary about it. I hope that Jordan Mechner set a better example and raised the bar with Price of Persia.
