assembling the IIGS system source code (part 1)

I decided to embark on trying to assemble the GS source code recently provided on macgui. I'm running Windows on a pc. So far it's been an ugly process but here's what I've learned:

I'm using BasiliskII running OS 8.1. Memory needs to be set to 16M to retain 24 bit addressing or LinkIIGS tool crashes miserably. That means OS 9 and greater won't work (I think).

I installed MPW GM from macgui.

I found MPWIIGS on the Golden Orchard CD and installed it.

I downloaded IIGS.601.SRC also from macgui.

I burned a CD from the .daa image included in that file and mounted that with Basilisk. It seems files transferred from a physical CD within Basilisk retain the text attributes. I learned the hard way that just copying files from outside Basilisk lose the text attribute and also lose the special characters within the script files. I used Ciderpress to change attributes to TEXT if needed.

I ran MPW and with a few editing tweaks got the GS Firmware to compile up to where it required the tool overlayIIGS which doesn't exist so that hit a dead end. Does anyone have other copies of MPWIIGS ?

Is anyone else insane enough to have tried this? I am making progress...
If there is more interest I can provide drive images and more details of my work done so far.
