Imagine a group of people who all have a fair amount of money to spend, and
they all really want an Apple II.
One guy, however, either has more money than each of the others, or he is
willing to spend more than each of the others. No matter what the case is,
he bids as high as he can against these other guys, and he wins.
Now this guy is satisfied, and he bows out of future auctions.
Along comes another Apple II, and now the bidding pool is constituted by the
remaining fellows. Since there are fewer people, and these are people who
may not have as much money to spend (or the will to spend it) as the winner
of the first auction, the bidding naturally does not reach such a climax as
it formerly did.
