If a software developer does not wish to release their source code, you
should not expect to be able to get hold of it whether you are willing
to pay for it or not. Demanding it, is simply bad manners.
Some software has been put into Open Source, but not all. Many hours of
work go into writing software, and even though the resulting complied
code may be released as FreeWare, there is no reason to expect that the
source code will be made freely available as well.
As has been pointed out, modifiying source code is not always easy, and
takes great skill and experience with the language that was used. There
are various assemblers and languages that might be used for the IIgs,
and you would need to be familiar with the actual one used by any source
code before you would be able to do anything at all.
So if Brutal Deluxe do not wish to help you further, that is certainly
within their rights to do so.
I have now made all my own software FreeWare, and any new titles I
release will be FreeWare as well. I have no intentions at this time to
release any of my source code as Open Source.
If you are keen to develop games for your kids, then I suggest you first
familiarise yourself with one of the many languages for the IIgs, and
with the Tool Box and other technical manuals you will need. The
Addiuson Wesley - Programmers Introduction to the IIgs, has many
programming examples to get you started, and you will find example
source code on some web sites as well.
With that knowledge, you can start from scratch to write your own games.
You would get help from those of us here if you ask nicely, and when you
are done, you would be free to release the new game as FreeWare, and if
you wished to, bundle the code with it as well.
