Many monitors have two magnetic rings with projecting tabs on the rear of
the deflection yoke. 

Adjusting one tab relative to the other changes the amount of lateral shift
and turning both together changes the direction of lateral shift. These are
called "centering magnets" and they are used to center the raster on the
CRT.
