@kevin: add a hardware flowcontrol to the avr is quite simple, just use other digital i/o pins of the mcu. A max 232 is enough to handle up to 4 signals (tx, rx, cts and rts). See here: http://hacking.majenko.co.uk/rs-232-shield regards marco
