When I modified my ZipGS, I put in single-row sockets, so it will accept

<sigh> If I'd been smart enough to use machined-pin socket strips I could
revert without problems. Instead, I took the strips from a conventional
socket. They have a ridge on the outside that prevents the .6" parts from
seating properly.

There was a whole period when average 80X86 motherboards were using the
machined pin sockets. So as i stripped those for parts, I was sure to keep
the sockets. Infinitely useufl, not just as sockets but I needed to make a
connector for my GPS unit and I just used a piece of circuit board and some
pins from the sockets.

It was just laziness that precluded my using machined pin sockets :-). The others were closer and could be accessed with less digging. I picked up a lifetime supply of machined sockets the other year. An electronics assembly company had gone out of business and abandoned their inventory. The landlord sent out a notice to all local hams and said "come and get it.." - absolutely free. I will probably never run out of sockets or common TTL chips.
