working with a i2c realtime clock reinforces my hatred of i2c

just to talk to the thing kills my ram budget (I only had a couple hundred bytes to work with after FAT filesystems and buffers) and just getting the thing to talk is like pulling teeth. 

Its like writing a thesis to send a text message. and I am using 300 bytes to get 4 bytes back in return.

I think I am going to go for another model that I can bit bang manually, it will increase cost by a couple bucks, but if I go over my ram budget, that means I need a "bigger" chip, which will cost 4-5 dollars more
