It's very likely that the drive can't spin at more than one speed, that the
motor is fixed.

As far as I know, only Apple computers had variable-speed 3.5" floppy
drives. These were manufactured by Sony.

The Apple drives used GCR at their lowest level, whereas the IBM drives used
MFM.

can read 800k disks. The disk type that can't be read on these Power Macs is
the 400k MFS format, and that's because Apple removed the support for
mounting them in the operating system. You can't mount them in the Finder,
but DiskCopy can still copy them.

Yes, I've found that the compact Macs make good companions for the Apple
IIgs, what with the localtalk ports and 3.5" disk drive.
