"Back in the day, " I would INIT with DOS 3.3 and then by manually calling
RWTS routines I would format the 36th track, and edit the VTOC to make the
36th track available.  This hack didn't require any change to DOS 3.3.

$34 number of tracks per disk -- normally $23 (35)

$C4-FF unused on normal disks (may contain extra bit maps on disks with more
than 35 tracks)

Of course, I eventually discovered that doing stuff like this causes more
trouble than what it is worth.
