The one and two liners were short enough for me to make sense out of. Then change out the LDA with BIT or STA to learn that some opcodes take longer than others.
Then I'd put two instructions together, and so on. I still did that, try bits of code and then put it together.

After that, it would probably be a good idea to demonstrate indexed addressing modes so that he can use a lookup table and draw hi-res shapes. A shape blitting routine is a pretty straightforward affair. I remember writing one when I was 15. That was a fun week!
