Re: Many File Formats: do they bother you?
Yes, they bother me. File compression (not just for Apple II) has caused me
a lot of grief: Imagine a year of versions of source code being lost
because someone decided to turn on "compression" on their file server /
backup system. Back up soon, backup often, but more importantly make sure
that you can restore. Thank goodness for massive storage essentially doing
away with any need for "compression."
I tend to mismanage. If I had to pick a disk format to download it would be
dsk files in DOS 3.3 format, but my preference doesn't make it more
convenient. Better than downloading is simply copying and pasting into the
emulator.
I've extracted many files from the disk files so that the files reside alone
on my file system which gives me:
- Source code files that can be opened and read with a text editor /
programming editor.
- Binaries that can be loaded into the memory of the emulator.
I am using a wide variety of emulators for a variety of platforms:

Overall I mostly use Sheldon Simms NTSC variant of AppleWin.exe on Mac OS X
using Wine.
I don't have real hardware so I am not transferring back.
